Welcome Rev. Bonney

Welcome Rev. David J. Bonney, our new lead pastor

On July 1st, Rev. David Bonney and his family will move into the newly renovated Stratford Avenue parsonage and Rev. Bonney will be in the pulpit on July 5th as our new Lead Pastor. Rev. Bonney comes to us from St. Mark’s Church in Midlothian, Virginia, after a 9-year tenure at that church as Lead Pastor. He was born and raised in Norfolk, Virginia. He received a Bachelor’s degree in History at Old Dominion University and a Master of Divinity at Duke. He is married to Gina Bonney. The Bonneys are a blended family including two young adult children: Thomas Bonney who resides and works in Durham, North Carolina, and Mary Lauren Bonney who attends college and works in Randleman, North Carolina. Together David and Gina have two daughters, Olivia age 12, and Melissa age 11, entering the 7th and 6th grades in the next school year. David’s previous pastoral appointments include serving The United Methodist Church on Knotts Island, Martinsville, the Associate Pastor at Aldersgate Church in Alexandria, and the founding pastor of New Life Church in Richmond before going to St. Mark’s Church as Lead Pastor. He has served as the Chair of the Board of Missions for the Richmond District, a member of the Church Development Team for the Virginia Conference, and in 2006 was recognized for his work in evangelism with the Virginia Annual Conference Denman Award. David finds great meaning in mission work with 15 mission trips to Honduras, developing mentoring programs, inner city home repair, and finding creative ways for the church to connect with the community.

David summarizes his faith and practice of ministry this way:

“I believe what really matters in life is following Jesus whole heartedly. The best way to live out a life of faith is through a strong, vital church where Christian joy propels us to do great things for the Lord Jesus.”

A welcoming reception for Rev. Bonney and his family is on July 12. Despite the 4th of July holiday, try to be in attendance on July 5th to meet our new Lead Pastor and extend a warm welcome to his family on his first Sunday with our church family.
