These are the ministries that your extra Lenten giving will support in our community

Our Lenten Giving-to-date0

Food Pantry: $2,000

Fairfax Church provides groceries to our neighbors through Britepaths. Britepaths’ Food Assistance supplies emergency and short-term food to Fairfax County area residents struggling financially and helping them bridge the gap until they recover from a crisis. Participants in the BritePaths program have access to personal budget counseling and are provided with gift cards for local grocery stores and farmer’s markets. In 2020, the church is committed to continuing to provide this needed support.

Local Mission Teams:

Funding is provided to support short-term, local mission projects. In 2019, the church supported families in the Fairfax City/County school boundaries—Providence, Daniels Run, and Fairfax Villa Elementary Schools through multiple short-term events. These included a mobile VBS, summer picnic with school supplies giveaway, family activities and games at special events and the Holiday Market to provide families with presents and a gift cards for a holiday meal. In 2020, the Lenten giving continues to support our community with events and materials that let them know God loves them and cares about their needs. Please express your ideas for a local mission project or event.

2020 Youth Summer Missions:

From July 5th-10th the FUMC and NLI (New Life) youth groups are serving together in our 2020 mission trip to the Blue Ridge region of North Carolina to participate in building projects, serve in children’s ministry, and be a part of other ministries and programs that improve the lives of others. A team of 28 persons have signed up to serve! Thank you for your prayers and continual support for our youth as they make plans to serve in these communities.

FISH: $500

FISH (For Immediate Sympathetic Help) supports the needy and elderly in the greater Fairfax City area of Fairfax County. FISH is an all-volunteer, ecumenical outreach organization founded over 40 years ago and comprised of 14 churches in Fairfax County in the vicinity of Fairfax. FISH responds to requests for food, clothing, and financial assistance for delinquent rent, mortgage, utility bills and prescriptions. Monday through Friday every week the member churches provide phone captains for two 4 hour shifts to receive and process requests for assistance. If you would like to know more about this ministry or volunteer for a phone captain shift, please contact Tony Almond.

Rising Hope Capital Campaign:

Rising Hope UMC is a mission of the Alexandria District of The United Methodist Church. Rising Hope is in a 3-year $500,000 Capital Campaign to replace kitchen equipment, a refrigerator and freezer in the food pantry, the entire HVAC system, and purchase a new church van to transport individuals to and from Rising Hope and other locations. Campaign contributions are also helping to decrease the building mortgage and provide additional financial resources for the ministry and mission of Rising Hope.

Feeding Neighbors:

Feeding our neighbors is following in Christ’s example. FUMC partners with FACETS, a local non-profit, to make sure individuals have access to at least one hot meal a day every day. On the first and third Fridays of each month, volunteers at Fairfax UMC prepare and deliver hot meals for families and individuals in our community. Last year, over 1,500 meals were served by our team at three local sites. In 2020, the church community continues feeding our neighbors. Volunteers for shopping, cooking and delivering the meals are always needed. To be a part of a team or for more information, contact Jim Conklin.

UMCOR/Emergency Response:

The United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR) is dedicated to alleviating human suffering around the globe. UMCOR’s work reaches out to 80+ countries, including the United States with teams of volunteers on the ground and already imbedded in the community. UMCOR provides humanitarian relief when war, conflict, or natural disaster disrupt life to such an extent that communities are unable to recover on their own. In 2019, FUMC assembled and delivered 200+ kits to a local UMCOR depot. In 2020, Fairfax Church continues to donate completed kits and financial support to provide immediate help to those in need.

Short Term Mission Projects/Honduras: $2500

Fairfax Church provides support to those members who would like to take part in short term mission projects. This ministry also provides avenues to partner with other churches in the area to address specific needs in the local community and around the globe. We are also continuing to offer mission opportunities in rural areas of Honduras.
