Fairfax UMC offers English as a Second Language (ESL classes) for Beginner, Intermediate, and Advanced English learners. Whether you want to learn English or volunteer to help with classes, you’ll find all the information you need here.

Fall 2026 Session Info
Registration:
Registration is open August 17–September 8, 2026.
In-person assessments (for new students) are Thursday, September 3, 10:00–11:30am and Wednesday, September 9, 7:00–8:30pm.
If neither time works for you, we will work with you to find an alternative.

How to Register
Follow these steps to sign up for English classes at Fairfax UMC.
1. Complete the registration form.
2. Choose a time for your English assessment.
All new students take a short English assessment before classes begin. The assessment helps us place you in the best class for your language level. You will choose an assessment appointment when you register.
3. Pay the $30 class fee.
The fall session fee covers 10 English classes and student books and materials. You can click here to pay online or bring cash or a check to your assessment appointment.

Volunteer with ESL
Want to help us make ESL classes possible? We are always looking for caring volunteers to join our team. Together, we can make a difference in our community by helping individuals achieve their language goals and build connections with others. Thank you for considering this opportunity to serve, share your gifts, and show the love of Christ through education.
How do I help?
ESL Volunteer opportunities include the following:
- Lead instructors who lead classes and create engaging lessons using provided books and curriculum.
- Class assistants who help with classroom activities and provide individual support to students.
- Administrative support members who assist with registration, materials preparation, and class coordination.
- Hosts who welcome students, help them find their classrooms, and provide an inviting snack and fellowship time.
But what about . . . ?
Training, curriculum, and resources are provided for all volunteers. No prior teaching experience is required, just a heart for helping others and a willingness to learn.
Classes are held 7:00–9:00pm on Wednesdays. If evenings don’t work for you, keep an eye out for information on possible daytime learning opportunities later this fall.
