DESCRIPTION:Join us this Lent as we travel through the wilderness with the Desert Fathers and Mothers\, those early Christian pioneers who followed Christ and\, like Christ\, spent formational time in the wilderness. Together\, we will enter into 40 days of prayer\, simplicity\, and renewal as we prepare for Easter. Daily devotionals are available on the Lectio 365 app\, and we will also gather in the Fellowship Hall on Wednesdays in Lent for study and discussion starting February 18. Note that\, while regular sessions of this study will be at 11:00am\, the February 18 session will be at 10:30am to allow for the Ash Wednesday noon service.

SUMMARY:English as a Second Language (ESL)
DESCRIPTION:Fairfax UMC offers citizenship and ESL classes on Wednesday nights\, September 10\, 2025–May 6\, 2026. Citizenship classes meet at 6:00pm–7:00pm and help students prepare for the US Naturalization Test. ESL classes meet at 7:00–9:00pm. These classes are offered at all levels and are meant for students whose first language is not English. Both classes do require a fee to help cover books and other expenses. ESL classes cost $40 for the whole class year\, and the citizenship class costs $20 for the whole year\, or you can take both classes for $50. You can pay by cash or check at in-person registration or on the first night of class. Tuition assistance and discounts for multiple family members are available. Classes are for students age 18 and older; childcare is not provided at this time. \nIf you are interested in attending ESL or citizenship classes\, please click here to pre-register\, then come to in-person registration on September 3 or September 8. This helps us to assess your needs and determine what class level is best for you. These roles involve the following responsibilities: \n\nLead Instructors: Lead classes\, create engaging lessons\, and provide support to students.\nClass Assistants: Help with classroom activities\, offer one-on-one support\, and assist the lead instructor.\nAdministrative Support: Assist with registration\, materials preparation\, and class coordination.\nHosts: Assist students with getting to class and set up an inviting snack time.\n\nCurriculum for each class is provided; all the instructors need to do is guide the students through the material. Training and resources are provided. SUMMARY:Maundy Thursday Service
DESCRIPTION:As we journey “among the trees” this Lent\, Maundy Thursday invites us to linger at the roots of our faith\, where love is practiced quietly and transformation begins close to the ground. This day commemorates the night Jesus shared the Last Supper with his disciples. The word Maundy comes from the Latin mandatum\, meaning “command” or “mandate\,” drawn from Jesus’ words: “I give you a new commandment\, that you love one another.” On that same night\, Jesus knelt and washed the disciples’ feet\, showing us that love is lived through humility\, service\, and self-giving grace. This Maundy Thursday\, we follow his example as an opportunity to truly consider the way that Jesus lowered himself in a tangible way before he journeyed to the Cross. This service is gentle\, meaningful\, and participatory. Come as you are\, whether you choose to take part in foot-washing or simply wish to witness and reflect. Worship begins at 7:00pm; we’ll see you there.

SUMMARY:English as a Second Language (ESL)
DESCRIPTION:Fairfax UMC offers citizenship and ESL classes on Wednesday nights\, September 10\, 2025–May 6\, 2026. Citizenship classes meet at 6:00pm–7:00pm and help students prepare for the US Naturalization Test. ESL classes meet at 7:00–9:00pm. These classes are offered at all levels and are meant for students whose first language is not English. Both classes do require a fee to help cover books and other expenses. ESL classes cost $40 for the whole class year\, and the citizenship class costs $20 for the whole year\, or you can take both classes for $50. You can pay by cash or check at in-person registration or on the first night of class. Tuition assistance and discounts for multiple family members are available. Classes are for students age 18 and older; childcare is not provided at this time. \nIf you are interested in attending ESL or citizenship classes\, please click here to pre-register\, then come to in-person registration on September 3 or September 8. This helps us to assess your needs and determine what class level is best for you.
